US-based Sikh Body Gives Scholarships of 200,000 dollar to Students in Punjab

Sikh community is known for their humble works. A US-based Sikh body has given scholarships worth USD 200,000 to poor students in Punjab to improve their access to higher education. As per recent media report, Sikh Human Development Foundation, which is based in Washington, said the scholarship has been given to 583 needy students in Punjab this year. This body is also known as SHDF.

SHDF financially assist meritorious and needy students in Punjab and other Northern Indian states to improve their access to higher education and professional courses. Mr. Gajinder Singh Ahuja, chairman of SHDF, said “Over the years, the organisation has awarded a total of 4001 scholarships“.

Jaspreet Kaur Ahuja, secretary general of SHDF, said, 68% of the recipients belong to rural areas of Punjab and adjoining areas. Maintaining the past trends, female students represented 74% of the total number of scholarship recipients. The outreach director of SHDF, Mr. Rajwant Singh said that the scholarships are awarded on need and merit basis. There are many colleges in the US states which provides Merit based fees relaxation.

Among the awardees following is the percentage of students from Punjab:

  • 32 percent are pursuing medical and nursing,
  • 33 percent engineering,
  • 23 percent management related,
  • 5 percent IT/computer courses,
  • 7 per cent other professional courses.

All students come from families earning less than USD 190 (Rs 12,000) a month and many with income less than USD 1 a day. It is great initiative from Sikhs body to provide quality education.
